THE SISTERS' SONG is OUT NOW from Allen and Unwin. Sign up to my newsletter.

I chose this photo for Midweek Moment for no reason other than I thought it was pretty. I loved the colour of these mauve flowers from the next-door neighbour’s plumbago. I took a few photos in vivo, then cut some to bring inside and snapped a few more:

Whereas my photo has a tranquil feel, Monique’s is full of movement and looks exciting. The way she writes about it, however, makes it sound very restorative:

‘Much is said about the healing effects of salt water. These days I rarely do more than dip my feet into the water, but two weeks ago I was encouraged to swim in an ocean pool. After the first few cold shivers, I let myself sink into the water and started to swim. The water felt soft on my skin. My worries floated away. And I soon found that I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to enjoy the feel of the water, the sound of the waves, the cry of the circling seagulls for as long as I could, because I knew that once I left the water, the worries of life would creep back in.’
