We’ve been busy photographing flowers again this week. Well, it is spring, and they are pretty, and they’re also more co-operative than animate wildlife.

This orchid in my photo was a gift from a friend. It has pride of place on my kitchen bench, and this week it’s had special nurturing. Earlier today, I took it outside and sprinkled it with water (only a little because I’ve drowned a few orchids in my day), and took photos.

Some of the shots have turned out really well, with the sun making the water droplets look jewel-like. But this photo was my favourite. I like the pastels and the light and the blurred softness. And I like the water drops along the edge of the lip. But most of all, I like the fine tendrils that curl from the end. They look so fragile, as indeed they are. As indeed we all are.

Monique says she’s always wanted to see the tulips at Araluen in Spring, but this is the first year she’s managed to go. As expected, there were loads of people taking photos—selfies (don’t get her started on selfie sticks, she says), close-ups of flowers, bobbing down between garden beds and so on. She didn’t know what she could snap that was different …

Earlier this week, she shared some photos on her blog of tulips reflected in water that resemble Monet’s Impressionist artworks. They have a soft, almost painted quality that she loved and which summed up her mood that day—soft and dreamy.

This photo is a sharper reflection of the tulips in the frog pond. For her, it speaks of the way aspects of life suddenly take on a sharper focus as priorities shift and change.

Certainly ‘different’ enough for me!
